Reading Tip #5: A Creative Way to Get Your Child to Read!

Most of the kids I've met LOVE watching TV and movies. A fun way to get your child to read for them to watch foreign language cartoons or movies with English subtitles. Studies have shown that children learn to read faster when they have to keep up with subtitles. In addition, they may also pick up a second language along the way. I first learnt Mandarin Chinese by watching television and reading the English subtitles. It's amazing what children can pick up. You can rent or borrow foreign movies and cartoons from your local library, netflix or blockbusters. Certain DVDs also include Spanish or French languages with English subtitles so be sure to check out your collection of movies at home first!

Of course, I wouldn't encourage dumping your kids in front of the tube all day. This can always be a special reward for good behavior, helping out with the chores, doing well in school, etc... Try it out and let me know how it goes!
